AMD64 Quick Install Guide

Two quick questions:

  • is this really needed? AFAICS it would differ from the x86 one in very few places (basically just install media, stage tarball and make.conf settings)
  • is this Wiki the place where it should live? The x86 is official Gentoo docs. Seems inconsistent if one guide lives there and the other one here.

1) It was requested and I think it would be nice to have. It would indeed not differ much from the x86 one, though maybe there are some other improvements that could be suggested.
2) Once this guide is deemed ready, it could be submitted for inclusion in the official docs space. Either way, there are very few people who are willing to write official documentation in GuideXML — it's a known barrier. The wiki is a much friendlier place to develop documentation. Whether it finds its permanent home here or in the official doc space is of minor relevance, in my opinion.

Agreed, and as trivial as the changes would be, it will be used. I personally spent a couple hours holding someone's hand in #gentoo the other day who couldn't be arsed to skim the handbook and had a lot of trouble mentally replacing 'amd64' with 'x86' in the quick install guide on gentoo.org. ¦ Reisio 01:08, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
my 2 cents, make a hybrid. just as i post systemd next to openrc init instructions on wiki pages, why not have 1 quick install with x86 else x86_64 instructions. my whole view on the handbook is that it should have a breaking point to ensure kernel + bootloader + stage3 all function as expected. i think we should get traditional, networkmanager, and wicd documentation to the point of functional with out x so rest of install can occur at this breaking point. the handbooks wonky and oddly structured.666threesixes666 (talk) 11:06, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Localization

I have a question basically similar to the one about the AMD64 quickinstall guide above/below.

There is already a localization guide in the official docs, which appears to be maintained (and it's working, too). Of course according to the document's summary it's only aiming to support localization to European locales. Is the intention of the wanted wiki page then to point to the official document (similar to the genkernel page) for that and otherwise deal with non-European locales, right-to-left text etc.? --JayDub 08:26, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I envision it more as a portal page pointing to such things as locale (which is pretty well covered in the guide you mentioned), keymaps and keyboard switching, input methods, fonts for different scripts, and so on.
