emaint to sync repo?

Talk status
This discussion is done.

Hi Jacob (Jacob) . I'm not sure there is any reason why emaint shouldn't be used to sync the repo... In fact, it may be preferable not to sync all repos (as emerge --sync does), but just to update the one repo. Advising plain emerge --sync could lead to soliciting some servers more than is advised, and I'm not sure it makes sense to sync all repos if you aren't doing an "emerge [...] world" update.

Concerning the emerge --sync command, the emerge manual says "emerge --sync command is a compatibility command", I'm not sure if this means that the emaint command is now preferred, or if it is just stating that they are equivalent.

All the best, Ris (talk) 22:25, 18 December 2022 (UTC).

emerge --sync actually respects auto-sync, which means that it doesn't sync repositories that are opted out of syncing. So it results in the same or fewer repos getting synced.
Syncing an overlay can be done by passing it as an argument to emerge --sync. I've added this to the page.
