Support other languages

We can split Localization/Guide apart? Or in some places i will have to write another translation as The Euro symbol for the console -> Cyrillic symbols for the console. If this localization guide please give opportunity to write for the nuances of languages other than German. -- Cronolio 23:26, 28 Dec 2015 (UTC)

I just split out the whole Euro symbol stuff into a separate sub page. --Charles17 (talk) 11:08, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
Should be mentioned in this guide about installing an unicode font, right? --Best, Pál (talk) 11:00, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
Also, should be mentioned that that one must to set USE flag 'unicode' in make.conf, right? --Best, Pál (talk) 11:08, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
Wrong place here. Unicode character set is mother of UTF-8 character encoding and is described there.
Regarding the USE flag, that's only useful if eix -c --installed-without-use unicode does not return nothing. --Charles17 (talk) 13:38, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

locale commands of sys-libs/glibc

Talk status
This discussion is still ongoing as of 22 November 2016.

Shouldn't be mentioned here that commands used in this article like

/usr/sbin/locale-gen
/usr/bin/localedef
/usr/bin/locale

are specific to sys-libs/glibc? Or do the alternative "system libraries" (sys-libs/musl, sys-libs/uclibc, ...) provide the same commands? Also the term system library as used in the article is not very clear. Is system library identical with C library?

Possible values of LINGUAS

Talk status
This discussion is still ongoing as of 28 December 2017.

The guide originally recommended looking at linguas.desc for possible values but the file is going out in a week. We should probably link to some nice reference of what to put there. Michał Górny (talk) 22:12, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

What about USE flag index?--Charles17 (talk) 07:01, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
This is generated from that file. --Michał Górny (talk) 07:21, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
Also l10n.eclass still mentions linguas.desc.--Charles17 (talk) 06:09, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

(ancient) MS-DOS localization

For MS-DOS (PC-compatible DOS, including PC DOS, DR DOS and PTS DOS, among others) there used to be local and isolated versions. E.g. FAT used to store timestamps in local time, not UTC, which later on became problematic, but was no real problem when files were still transported locally on floppy disks.

The same is true for codepages. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the codepage used on FAT volumes was not 437, but 850 (Wikipedia: "DOS-Latin-1"). DOS people knew this, as it was part of their CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT in the old days.src

CONFIG.SYS

COUNTRY=049,850,C:\DOS\COUNTRY.SYS

AUTOEXEC.BAT

MODE CON CODEPAGE PREPARE((850) C:\DOS\EGA.CPI)
MODE CON CODEPAGE SELECT=850

So, it would be part of the localization for people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH -- De, At, CH), or Central Europe as the codepage suggests, to set the FAT config in the kernel to codepage 850 in order to correctly access their old (ancient) but localized floppy disks.

Where would such a section go on this Wiki page? Luttztfz (talk) 17:15, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Locale in Plasma

Something might have changed recent (?) years for Plasma users. For the first time, any systemd localectl commands did not work and I needed to change locale through Plasma's "System Settings > Region & Language" (or just change to LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in ~/.config/plasma-localerc). --Costis (talk) 20:48, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
