How to disable NetworkManager without uninstalling?

Talk status
This discussion is done.

How can I disable the NetworkManager service? The normal way to disable it with "rc-update del ..." has no effect. It still starts the NetworkManager at boot. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by DasPaul (talkcontribs) 16 July 2013

The desktop environment you are using may be trying to start it automatically. Perhaps try looking into services that attempt to start after login on this level. Please be sure to sign your comments when posting to talk pages. --Maffblaster (talk) 05:48, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

adding user to plugdev

Talk status
This discussion is done.

two things: Firstly, the plugdev group may not exist prior to installing networkmanager. Perhaps this should be moved to the configuration section?

Secondly, "root # gpasswd -a $USER plugdev" will add root, and not "your user", to the plugdev group. Is this intended?

Good observation. Someone who is new to Linux could get confused. I added some notes for clarity's sake. Please be sure to sign you comments when posting to talk pages. :) Thanks! --Maffblaster (talk) 05:48, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Dnsmasq

Talk status
This discussion is done.

It should be mentioned that dnsmasq should not be enabled as a service, NetworkManager will do this by its own. I wondered why my resolv.conf was updated by the DHCP client until I found NetworkManager tried to spawn dnsmasq which was already running. --Vitaminless (talk) 14:42, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Vitaminless , please feel free to add a snipped about this in the article. This wiki is open to editing by the public (Gentoo community). I will close this discussion as there is nothing to discuss about this edit. :) --Maffblaster (talk) 23:07, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

dhcp

This discussion is done as of 15 July 2022.

Maybe we should add that you don't need neither dhclient nor dhcpcd as a use flag, since NetworkManager has its own internal dhcp client? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mads (talkcontribs) 13 August 2020

A fix was provided (Special:Diff/948459). --Blacki (talk) 06:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
