x11-base/nouveau-drm <--- what of this package? my nouveau is repeatedly crashing, or x, or compiz and i suspect its nouveau as its the only major difference from my desktop that is running flawlessly on the desktop. sometimes it will unfreeze as if its trying to access a missing library then gives up, and works as usual until it goes on to the next repeated crashing. 666threesixes666 (talk) 07:04, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
- x11-base/nouveau-drm looks like the "in portage tree" DRM driver for nouveau. You can use either, the DRM driver within the portage tree or the in-kernel nouveau DRM driver. (Going from memory as I frequently just use the nvidia-driver proprietary driver, as it's commonly known newer cards do not work well with nouveau.) My guess, remove the nouveau-drm package and compile the kernel nouveau DRM driver. If you use nvidia-drivers, you might have to either compile nouveau DRM as a module or not compile the kernel DRM drivers as those drivers might conflict with the proprietary nvidia-drivers. ---Roger (talk) 12:27, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
I added a Limitations section to this page. However, such a section could also just as well be added to the NVIDIA/nvidia-drivers page. Perhaps it could be useful to create a separate page comparing the two drivers sets and their respective advantages and disadvantages. Ennui (talk) 15:34, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Page needs rewrite
Considering doing a full redo on this page as I feel the information is largely outdated and there have been a number of recent developments that makes nouveau a more viable choice for day-to-day usage (GSP & NVK, firmware availability, features). Will begin typing something up as and when I have the time but would appreciate any feedback relating to what the scope and contents of the reworked article should be.
