Discussion about template parameters

Hi Gavlee,

I can foresee some problem with having the {{man}} template the way it is currently. It could lead to broken links. For example if someone inputs {{man|ifconfig}} into the template (which is a decently common command), the link looks good, but the page does not exist on man7.org (ifconfig is not part of core-utils). I might suggest adding a couple more parameters to the {{c}} template that will add a link to the man page. Perhaps rawlink=http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/bash.1.html and link=man1/bash.1. What do you think? --Maffblaster (talk) 15:55, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

After almost 7 years this discussion should now be closed. I will do the work to the template. --Maffblaster (talk) 20:54, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

Proposal: Include section number in presentation

In using this template on the libinput page today, i encountered the issue of two different man pages with the same name, but different section numbers, not being distinguishable - libinput(1) and libinput(4). i end up using the 'raw' parameter so that i could provide custom text which includes the section numbers.

i know of at least one other instance of this; there's groff(1) (the binary) and groff(7) (the roff language). i imagine there are probably others.

My suggestion would be that the template include the section number alongside the presented name, as is customary. Any objections or concerns?

Sorry no not get back to you sooner Alexis (flexibeast) . Very good idea, and I see you are on it now. You can get in touch in #gentoo-wiki (webchat) if you want to talk about templates at all ;). -- Ris (talk) 23:13, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Proposal: Use manpages.debian.org instead of man7.org

A number of the man pages i want to link to - most recently, bt-obex(1), bt-network(1), mako(5) and makoctl(1) - are not available on man7.org, with the result that i'm manually linking to manpages.debian.org. Is there any reason to not use manpages.debian.org rather than man7.org?

i've just gone ahead and made the change. Feel free to revert if necessary.
