Remove global/local designation
Users are commonly confused by the desgination of global or local USE flags thinking they have special meaning when they do not. The only distinction is where the flag's description comes from a global profile/use.desc file or the local metadata.xml

Translations for Template:USEflag
Hi Gentoo wiki team,
Recently I came across this USE flag template while translating wiki articles. It seems to be a nice feature. I like it so much. Unfortunately, I can't able to translate it. Then I found out that those definitions for each USE flag for a particular package are actually pulled from packages.gentoo.org site.
Is there any way I can translate those definitions on the package.gentoo.org site? And if it isn't possible, would it be possible to tweak some parts in this template to make it accept replacement texts like how some of these templates have text= to insert our text? But I think that wouldn't work either since there is no text to replace. All it does is just bring information from other site, like a reference.
And yes I do aware that this template is far more complicated than templates like kernel, file, etc., But it could be a lot more helpful for the readers to know more about use flags. It's my humble suggestion.

- This is incredibly difficult to the point that a whole new ecosystem of translation would be required. Yes, the data is pulled from packages.gentoo.org. The packages site takes its data from the main Gentoo repository and, either, the various metadata.xml files and profiles/use.desc, or, both profiles/use.desc and profiles/use.local.desc. The metadata files have the ability to translate flags, but hardly anyone bothers with it. One example is sys-boot/refind. I don't believe there is any provision for getting the profile description files translated. Even after that monstrous task, packages site would have to be modified to have this site's code change to pick up the new data. I'm not sure how

- I'm started browsing those metadata.xml files on Gentoo repository. I find translations for some languages. Is there any way I can edit those and add my translation in longdescription tag? As I'm not a gentoo developer, I don't know whether I'm allowed to modify anything on those repositories or even submit pull request. --Kingoflove (talk) 06:28, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, hear me out. How about we create a separate wiki page which would contain all the USE flags and let people translate those short descriptions. It would be hard to translate all those at once, but let's just say I want to translate USE flags for app-editor/vim. I can browse USE flags on this new wiki page and translate only those. From what you have said earlier, it sounds difficult to modify the existing template. We don't want to mess with an existing one. Instead, we create a new template which pulls only the useflags from repos, but when it comes to descriptions for those use flags, we make them choose wiki page data over repository data. I don't know whether this will work or not. Again, it's just a suggestion. I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this idea. --Kingoflove (talk) 19:19, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
