For some of ebuilds, portage shows you version 9999. It means this ebuild uses latest upstream version.
After install, portage shows you installed version as 9999. It is impossible to watch for new versions with portage (?).
How to install
Example for a package sci-misc/boinc:
root #emerge --ask sci-misc/boinc-9999How to update
