  • In the sentence "Support requests related to package.unmask and/or package.mask might not be answered." the Path template should be used for the parts in bold.
  • Same for "When a package has been masked by the Gentoo developers, yet despite the reason mentioned in the package.mask file"

"~amd64" missing in examples

The examples shown in Handbook:AMD64/Portage/Branches#Mixing_stable_with_testing should include the ~arch information.--Charles17 (talk) 09:01, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

I have just reworked the stable and testing sections and believe this request is now resolved. See Special:Diff/1026216/1169681 for the changes. --Maffblaster (talk) 08:44, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

In the red warning text, I think "a other" should be changed to "another". --Dhirsbrunner (talk) 02:08, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

It's in section Testing.

Suggested changes

This discussion is done as of 2024-10-18.

General suggestion: It might be useful to have some brief introductory text explaining the concept of a 'branch' in the context of Portage.

"Stable" section

Proposed changes - Please make edits here until a final revision is agreed upon.

For less risk of instability or other issues, it's recommended that users should stay on the stable software branch in general, and only allow testing versions of packages on a case-by-case basis - refer to the "Mixing stable with testing" section below.

"Testing" section

Suggest removing the phrase "Hic sunt dracones!" from the Warning, as it seems unnecessary; at the very least, it should be rendered as "Here be dragons", rather than expecting readers to know Latin / Latin phrases.

Proposed changes - Please make edits here until a final revision is agreed upon.

As noted above, it is recommended that users stay with the stable, more thoroughly tested branch.

and performing a @world update

"Masked packages" section

Proposed changes - Please make edits here until a final revision is agreed upon.

Gentoo developers mask packages for good reason. Therefore, unmasking a package is generally not supported by Gentoo's support channels, and support requests related to package.unmask and/or package.mask are likely to be ignored or marked as WONTFIX. Please exercise due caution when unmasking packages.
Proposed changes - Please make edits here until a final revision is agreed upon.

When attempting to install the package, Portage will output a message indicating the package has been masked, together with (usually) the reason why.

Suggest removing the phrase "(poor doggy!)", as it seems unnecessary.

Thanks! Added in Special:Diff/1298201/1316653
