Quik bootloader no longer in repo, Handbook still refers to it

Talk status
This discussion is done as of 2024-09-20.

The quik bootloader is no longer in portage.

The ppc32 handbook still refers to it Handbook:PPC/Installation/Bootloader#Alternative:_Using_Quik

Can confirm. It's a simple fix: just remove that section.

GRUB2 with ext4 for PPC

Talk status
This discussion needs help as of July 10, 2017.
Tip: To get this fixed sooner, use {{Proposal}}.

NewWorld Apple (G4 at least) is somewhat supported with grub2. It provides also support for ext4 for root file system, so it should be mentioned also as an option.

Here are some instructions how to do away with grub2: http://cynic.cc/blog/posts/running_grub2_on_powerpc_macs/

I ended up trying that route, as current yaboot-ebuild is broken (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=527974). — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jruoho (talkcontribs) March 21, 2015‎

I ran into this problem with yaboot:

Maybe the workaround should be mentioned?

--Min.xu (talk) 21:32, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Feel free to update the handbook. Me and SwifT don't use PPC. --Maffblaster (talk) 22:22, 4 April 2017 (UTC)
I'm going to mark this discussion as closed. Min.xu , please add the workaround to the Yaboot article. If/when you add it there I will provide a link to the PPC Handbook. Those on the Handbook team do not have the knowledge or the resources (we don't have PPC systems) to actually be good caretakers for the PPC Handbook. Please message me on #gentoo-wiki (webchat) if/when you do what I ask. Kind regards, --Maffblaster (talk) 19:12, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
Sure. I can't seem to edit the page though. --Min.xu (talk) 16:57, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Another alternative is just to install yaboot-static, as with PPC64. --downsj
Reopening this discussion. Recently a friends gave me a Power Mac G5, so in the future I can now help with the PPC Handbook. If I verify nothing needs improved/change in terms of the bootloader I'll close it back down; from a brief scan it looks like you guys are right and we'll at least need to migrate the PPC Handbook away from yaboot to GRUB2. :) --Maffblaster (talk) 21:07, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

I decided to try and write a guide for setting up GRUB on NewWorld PowerMacs on Gentoo, perhaps it'll be useful when adding a section about GRUB into the handbook (since I myself had trouble setting up yaboot on my machine): https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8230932.html Dusxmt (talk) 16:47, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

I just completed a fresh Gentoo install on my iBook G4 with ext4 (no ext2 boot partition) and GRUB 2.02-r3, using Dusxmt 's guide (the semi-automatic installation). Worked perfectly. Setting up GRUB has since become even easier than it already was: sys-boot/grub is no longer masked and powerpc-ieee1275 support is already enabled. It would be nice if this could be added to the handbook. Especially since yaboot is broken. --Jogness (talk) 21:39, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Seconding all the other calls for the grub instructions to be added to the handbook. The option should also be mentioned in the section on creating a partitioning scheme. Also, for users still attempting to install yaboot, it should at least be noted that, according to numerous forum threads and my own experience, yaboot-static compiles while the dynamic libs version specified in the handbook does not. --Wideaperture (talk) 16:25, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Setting the root passwod

Talk status
This discussion is done as of 2022-06-13.

I think this page needs to mention setting a root password before rebooting. Otherwise, you will end up not able to login to the new system after rebooting. I don't think I can directly edit this page to add this info. Someone who can perhaps can add this info? Min.xu (talk) 18:49, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

This is mentioned in a previous chapter, Configuring the system, so should already be done by this point. --Grknight (talk) 12:49, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Brian Evans (Grknight) is correct. Root password is set in the previous section. Discussion can be closed. --Maffblaster (talk) 19:23, 13 June 2022 (UTC)
