Apple New World section improvements

Comments for section "Apple New World":

  • Warning about not using ext4 would have been nice (yaboot does not support it)
  • bootstrap partition could be bigger, so installing grub2 would be easier — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jruoho (talkcontribs) 08:53, March 21, 2015‎
A very kind thank you, friend! I'll update this section for you! --Maffblaster (talk) 06:35, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
I'd like to second both comments above. While there are some reports in various comment threads about yaboot now supporting ext4, it did not work with ext4 in my case. At the very least it might be worth it to say that experience has been variable in this regard. I also agree that having the bootstrap partition be a bit larger (~2MB?) would be helpful, as many users seem to be falling back to grub after a range of difficulties with yaboot. --Wideaperture (talk) 16:26, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Additional comment for section "Apple New World"

  • Where the text gives guidance on removing "Disk Driver" partitions using mac-fdisk, for me it wasn't enough to simply initialize the disk with mac-fdisk's "i" option as specified in the handbook note. When I tried this option, I was unable to commit further changes. To get it to work I first had to use mac-fdisk to delete several partitions. I started with the highest numbered partition, then kept deleting partitions in descending order until mac-fdisk told me it was unable to delete the most recent partition I'd specified. At that point, using the "i" option successfully initialized the disk and allowed me to commit additional changes to the partition scheme. --Wideaperture (talk) 16:26, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

XFS not included in the dist kernel

Talk status
This discussion needs help as of October 22, 2023.

Recently it was discovered that XFS support is not included by default in the distribution kernel for PowerPC (relevant bug: bug #915871), maybe a note could be added to that section including the necessary config flags to set or just replacing XFS with ext4 in the meantime?

Needed config:

FILE /usr/src/linux/.config
...
CONFIG_XFS=FS=y
CONFIG_XFS_SUPPORT_V4=y
CONFIG_XFS_QUOTA=y
CONFIG_XFS_POSIX_ACL=y
...
