Unable to install Gentoo on server

Talk status
This discussion is done.

I purchased a Dell PowerEdge 1950 to install Linux and learn. I used a USB 3.0 and made it bootable using imageusb and got the following error: "Isolinux.bin corrupt or missing error" when attempting to boot to the USB. The server recognized the device but shot that error. I then formatted the USB and tried using the DD command on another Linux machine and got the same error. I then proceeded to think maybe it was the USB, so I changed to an older USB 2.0 using imageusb, rufus and dd command in a Linux VM I have on my laptop. All came to the same error when trying to boot to it. I then thought maybe because the bios were outdated, so I updated the bios on the server. Still no success. I then went ahead and downloaded Nero and burned the iso image on dvd and tried booting it off the DVD. I got this: "Syslinux 3.86 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H> Peter Anvin et al" but still will not boot to the Gentoo.

I know they work because both USB's and the cd booted fine on another pc but this server will not boot to the live Gentoo. Any ideas as to why or any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wiki is not the place to ask support questions, particularly on a random, unrelated page. Please seek out standard methods like #gentoo on freenode IRC or using the Gentoo Forums. --Grknight (talk) 02:51, 6 February 2019 (UTC)

Deleting discussions

Section Editing discussions says:

Delete discussions when they are out-of-date
Discussions can often get left lying around on a talk page long after the issue is no longer relevant. It's usually a good idea to reply to saying "I think this is now resolved", but sooner or later it's time to just blow away the old discussions (they are of course preserved in the editing history).

Is this really something we want to advise/encourage?

  1. Outdated discussions can be closed
  2. Closed discussions can be archived
  3. Discussions that were abandoned by their authors can be moved to Category:Discussions needing clarification

Even if they're preserved in the history, deleted discussions are neither categorized nor visible to page visitors.

Someone recently deleted 10,000 bytes' worth of discussions, some of which were still open. This doesn't sit right with me.

I propose removing the quoted part from the article.

New discussion instructions

Talk status
This discussion is still ongoing as of 2024-06-23.

Hi P.Fox (Ris) , I see you re-added the instructions for new sections on talk pages. I removed those instructions because I added a new link to {{Talk page}} that automatically takes care of that stuff. That link is documented in the section you edited.

If you think those instructions should be left in, I won't stop you. I just felt that the section was a bit long, since people clearly don't bother reading it.

Ah, "re-added"... I didn't realize that we had had the instructions and that they were removed - I just looked at the page and thought "how on earth can we not have instructions explaining how to use sections in talk pages, here" xD.
No worries Waldo, there's no risk that you might "stop" me doing things around here :). (please don't take that the wrong way - it's intended in jest and with all the gratefulness we all owe you for all the work you seem to have been doing :) ).
Looking at the recent talk page changes is one of my (many) priorities, so hopefully, in less than six months to a year, I'll get a chance to check out what has changed xD (I'm still devaway...).
We need to get this page up and running so that any "fundamental" changes can more easily be noticed by editors (any changes to "the way things work"). Feel free, Waldo or anyone else, to move that page to an appropriate place in the main namespace and try to fill it out as much as possible with important or interesting changes from at least the past two or three years...
One day, hopefully asap, I or other admins will get time to start to go through the mountain of changes we have recently got from so many contributors. It's a wiki, as long as on average things are going in the right direction we will sort everything out in the end :).
Thanks again for your edits Waldo, and thanks for the heads-up just now about this :).

please don't take that the wrong way

No worries. To be honest, I didn't feel like I worded the "If you think those instructions should be left in, I won't stop you" part correctly. I was trying to say that I supported whatever decision you would make, and that my last edit was just a suggestion (i.e. me being bold).

That page is an excellent idea. I'll see what I have to offer there. I think it should probably be moved to the Gentoo Wiki namespace, but that's a topic for a discussion on that page's talk page.

🙏
The "wiki evolution" page has to be able to be edited by everyone, I'm not sure if the "Gentoo Wiki" namespace allows that or not, I'd have to check. It certainly needs to go in an appropriate place/category in any case :).
