Removing the "dirty" flag
I have cleaned up and updated this page to reflect the current process required to get a midi controller working on Gentoo. If there are no objections, I will be removing the "dirty" flag from this page. Pudding (talk) 03:18, 17 August 2021 (UTC)
JACK usage
I just added a command example to start timidity as a JACK server. According to the man page, the -Oj parameter is used to selecs the output mode from the compiled-in alternatives. When I use it like into the example command, I get "Couldn't start JACK device (`j')", but it work as expected. What is strange is than we can find that example all over the internet in other wikis. I will ask the timidity team about that issue before making more editing. --DominiqueMichel (talk) 14:04, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
Rename page?
i feel this page should either be renamed to "TiMidity++" (or simply "TiMidity" if "+" isn't allowed in page names), or that the bulk of it should be extracted and added to a new page. The last sentence of the opening paragraph itself says "This article will only focus on timidity++." Thoughts? (cc:User:ris) -- Flexibeast (talk) 05:20, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Isn't fluidsynth another option? TiMidity++ is totally optional, I once ran a system with MIDI music output purely on FluidSynth (provided the software you use supports fluidsynth)...
- Also, I heard that there are MIDI setups possible that don't use either. But I'm not a professional, so what do I know... Luttztfz (talk) 14:11, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Edit: I just found this: http://www.tedfelix.com/linux/linux-midi.html Luttztfz (talk) 14:13, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- i'm not a professional either, but i use both fluidsynth and TiMidity++ in my Rosegarden setup, as i've been documenting on the Rosegarden page. And in the opening paragraph of the page, the sentence preceding the one i quoted indeed mentions fluidsynth. But the issue i'm raising isn't about whether or not there's MIDI software for Gentoo other than TiMidity++; the issue is about how to organise the current information on the wiki, given that, as the page currently stands, the page title is misleading - the page content is about TiMidity++ and nothing else. Presumably the hope was that others would add content about other MIDI software, but this apparently hasn't ended up happening. So, as i noted in my previous comment, there are now basically two options, which i'll now elaborate on:
- 1. Rename the page to something like 'TiMidity++', and abandon "MIDI controllers" page until someone actively puts together a separate page that covers more than one piece of MIDI software available on Gentoo.
- or
- 2. Move the TiMidity++-related content out to its own page, to which this page (and other pages, such as the Rosegarden page) can link, keeping this page as a stub which can be expanded to describe the various MIDI software available on Gentoo. i'm willing to do this, and to create an initial table of software (Ă the tables on the "List of software for Wayland" page), although i'd welcome and encourage someone else doing this work. This is my preferred option, although it might be necessary to add a note saying something to the effect of "This page is intended as an overview; detailed descriptions of MIDI software should go on their own dedicated page."

- Hi Alexis (Flexibeast) ! I've tried to move TiMidity++-related content to a new TiMidity++ article and MIDI-related content to a new MIDI meta-article. Also added Category:MIDI. I haven't stubbed a fluidsynth article though... Hopefully things are better organized this way and I've not messed anything up too much - the hope is this should now be a good foundation for building out MIDI-related articles :). -- Ris (talk) 13:18, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks P.Fox (Ris) . đ Closing this discussion.
